In – between | Annetta Spanoudaki

The installation - performance by Annetta Spanoudaki urges the viewer to shift from an individual, to a wider perspective

On 31st May 2010, Israelis bombard the ship Mavi Marmara in international waters. 10 deaths, 60 casualties. Official apology from Israel, the issue is considered closed. Thousands of refugees – from countries in a state of war- hostages in the most inhuman conditions of exploitation attempt to cross the Mediterranean with tragic consequences, since then. ‘... a silent massacre, a crime against humanity…” according to the newspaper La Republica.

Too often nowadays, and more easily we become spectators and witnesses to events we are unable to understand, events that will be recorded as historic. What makes an event historic? How and who is it documented by? What are the traces that can’t be deleted and remain throughout the time?

The presence of historical and sociological research in contemporary thought and art becomes stronger and stronger, these days. The concept of memory – individual and collective – acquires special significance and decisive importance. Paul Ricoeur deals in depth with memory and oblivion in his work Memory, History, Forgetting and wonders whether collective oblivion presupposes amnesia: the reverse of truth. Therefore the concept of memory and its representation often become the basic tool many artists use to create “projects - monuments”. Using various means they approach contemporary events and deal with matters concerning identity, nationalism, power, authority etc.

The installation in - between is a project that processes space both conceptually and literally. Its axis is “the ephemeral” and “the worthless”. It encourages spectators to move from their personal perspective to an overall image. The image narrates; it can be read over and over again and expects to be transformed from an image within a frame to a stimulus for a dynamic dialogue.

“We are all products of maps, real and metaphoric”. T.Judt

Every artwork extends itself into space, occupying or transforming it. This creates an environment in which relationships and behaviors are developed. There is a difference between what we see, and how we look upon it.nThe performance “in – between” roots upon this hidden ritual, raising the question: what remains of an “epic" world, and how deeply are we involved in changing our perspective and its essence."

"In art we do not deal with imagination, yet we are concerned with the experience of reality. We must grasp on to experience - keep our conscious alive, this is why we must always be on the move, it has to do with the moment." Christo
